How to pursue CNA training without tuition

  1. 1

    Match the approved training site

Look up the class provider in the IDOH nurse aide directory. When an employer assigns another host facility, check that location before accepting a seat.

  2. 2

    Request the next local class

ASC's FAQ says its recruiting team discusses locations and schedules after application. Get your start date and required attendance hours before arranging childcare or changing work shifts.

  3. 3

    Separate tuition from paid hours

ASC's pathway page promises free CNA classes. Ask separately whether your offer includes wages during instruction, employment after testing and a required period of service.

  4. 4

    Check funding before registering

WorkOne Indy reviews eligibility, the selected course and available funds before approving training support. Ask specifically about current CNA funding before you pay a deposit.

  5. 5

    Complete training and both tests

IDOH requires the training route's approved course and written and skills tests. Ivy Tech schedules testing; passing both tests leads to placement on the Indiana Aides Registry.

Nursing assistant employment and wages around Indianapolis

The BLS May 2025 OEWS metro estimates report 9,730 nursing assistant jobs (31-1131) in the Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood, IN metro area. The median wage was $18.69 per hour and $38,880 per year. These estimates describe the occupation across the metro, rather than the wage attached to a particular training offer.

When you compare a paid CNA training position, request the training wage, hours and post-certification wage separately. Check whether the offer lists full-time, part-time or as-needed work. Use the employer's own application process; Indianapolis Trade Schools provides independent information and does not make hiring decisions.

What free CNA training covers

ASC publishes free CNA classes. Get a written list of covered items and ask separately about wages. For comparison, Central Nine's currently linked course sheet lists $1,025, including books, the state exam and supplies, and says DWD grants are no longer available for that class.

Under 42 CFR 483.152(c), a covered nursing facility cannot charge an aide employed or offered employment when training begins, including required textbooks and materials. If you pay first and enter covered facility employment within 12 months after completing training, the State must provide for proportional reimbursement during employment. Keep receipts. For another funding review, contact WorkOne Indy about WIOA and the exact course's current eligibility; its general funding service does not establish CNA coverage.

Questions for a CNA training sponsor

  • Which approved program and street address will my class use?
  • What is the next confirmed start date?
  • Which classroom and clinical hours must I attend?
  • Am I paid for training hours, and when does employment begin?
  • Who covers testing, materials, health checks and required clothing?
  • Is there a work commitment or repayment clause?
  • How do I claim any nursing facility training reimbursement?

Common questions

Does free CNA training mean I receive a paycheck?

Tuition coverage and paid time are separate terms. ASC's FAQ describes free classes and says you do not need to be an employee to attend. Ask for the employment offer and paid-hours policy. Check whether classroom study, clinical practice and exam days are paid before planning your budget around training income.

Can a nursing facility charge me if it hires me before training starts?

Under 42 CFR 483.152(c)(1), an aide employed by, or holding an employment offer from, a covered facility when training begins cannot be charged for any part of the training and competency evaluation program. The protection includes required textbooks and course materials. Keep your offer and course documents together.

Can I recover costs after paying for CNA classes myself?

The federal rule provides a reimbursement route when an aide enters employment, or receives an employment offer, from a covered facility within 12 months after completing the program. The State must arrange proportional reimbursement during employment. Ask how to submit receipts and document your employment; the rule does not promise an immediate full refund.

What comes after an Indiana nurse aide course?

IDOH requires the written and skills tests for the standard training route. Ivy Tech Community College schedules those tests. Passing both leads to registration on the Indiana Aides Registry. Ask your instructor which application documents you need and whether the sponsor covers the initial test and any retests.

Are public CNA classes automatically tuition-free?

A public provider can still charge tuition. Central Nine's linked CNA sheet lists $1,025 and says DWD grants are no longer available for that course. WorkOne Indy offers funding reviews for eligible job seekers, but you need approval for your specific program. Confirm an award before treating any class as free.
