Get an Indiana CDL

  1. 1

    Choose your license class

Ask which vehicle and endorsements match your work plans. Check the exact training type and location in the FMCSA registry before you pay.

  2. 2

    Check age and medical eligibility

Indiana allows property transport within state lines from age 18 and requires a current medical certificate for your first CLP or CDL. Interstate driving generally requires age 21. Indiana permit rules; FMCSA age guidance

  3. 3

    Pass the permit knowledge tests

Take the knowledge exams for your vehicle and endorsements to obtain a commercial learner's permit. Indiana BMV lists general knowledge, air-brake and combination-vehicle exams among the applicable tests.

  4. 4

    Complete required entry-level training

First-time Class A or B applicants generally need ELDT from registered providers. Complete theory and behind-the-wheel training for the correct class; the provider reports successful completion. FMCSA training steps

  5. 5

    Schedule your CDL skills exam

Hold your CLP for at least 14 days. Indiana's exam covers vehicle inspection, basic controls and road driving at an authorized test site. BMV testing requirements

  6. 6

    Finish Indiana's licensing requirements

First-time Indiana CDL applicants must also watch the human-trafficking awareness video and attest to viewing it. Follow the BMV's final requirements when you apply for your license.

Indianapolis truck driving employment and wages

The May 2025 BLS OEWS estimates show 20,480 heavy and tractor-trailer truck driver jobs in the Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood, IN metro area. The median wage was $29.80 per hour, or $61,980 per year. This is occupation-wide pay, not a wage promised to a new CDL holder. BLS metro table, occupation 53-3032

When you compare job offers, ask how compensation is calculated and what time is paid. Read the route, home-time, training-pay and reimbursement terms together. Also check which license class, endorsements and driving experience the employer requests. The heavy-truck category does not describe every job that uses a Class B license.

CDL tuition, grants and employer support

Vincennes University's January 2026 prices are $6,000 for Class A and $3,000 for Class B, including a physical, drug screen, ELDT and one skills test. Indy CDL Academy advertises four-week training starting at $5,298. Knight's general school FAQ lists $5,200 tuition.

Ask WorkOne Indy about WIOA funding and eligibility before enrolling. Indiana DWD lists Workforce Ready Grant training options. TDI's Whiteland campus says eligible students can use GI Bill benefits. Employer sponsorship or reimbursement may carry a work commitment; review the repayment terms. Ask any college whether the exact CDL course qualifies for FAFSA/Pell funding before you count on federal student aid.

Ask before you choose a truck driving school

  • Does this exact yard have the TPR training type I need?
  • Where will theory, range practice and road driving happen?
  • What is my individual driving time, excluding observation?
  • Will training and testing use a manual or automatic truck?
  • Does the quote cover permits, physical, drug screen and retests?
  • What is the next open start date and attendance schedule?
  • What must I repay if I leave a sponsored program or employer?

How to check a school

Common questions

Can I get a CDL at age 18 in Indiana?

Indiana permits property transport within state lines from age 18. Federal rules generally require you to be 21 for interstate commercial driving. Your age can therefore affect the work you can accept even after training. Ask the school and prospective employer about the routes and vehicles involved before paying tuition. Indiana CLP eligibility; FMCSA age rules

Can I complete a CDL program online?

You can take theory online when your provider offers that format, but driving practice happens in person. The Indianapolis 160 Driving Academy page lists online theory and a local Minnesota Street training yard. Check each provider's registry entry for the theory or behind-the-wheel component you need, and confirm who reports completion. 160's Indianapolis format; FMCSA provider selection

How soon can I take the Indiana CDL skills test?

Indiana requires you to hold your commercial learner's permit for at least 14 days before attempting the skills exam. You must also meet the applicable training requirements. The BMV says skills-test appointments must be scheduled with an authorized third-party site at least two days before the exam date. Indiana CDL testing steps

Is paid CDL training the same as free tuition?

Read the agreement before treating sponsorship as free training. Knight's general FAQ lists tuition, financial agreements and reimbursement linked to employment. WorkOne Indy uses a separate eligibility process for training assistance. Ask who pays first, which expenses are covered and what you owe if you leave the course or job early. Knight tuition terms; WorkOne funding review
